The Nordic countries (also known as the Nordics or Norden ‘the North are a geographical and cultural region in Northern Europe and the North Atlantic. It includes the sovereign states of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden; the autonomous territories of the Faroe Islands and Greenland; and the autonomous region of Åland.

The Nordic countries cluster near the top in education, economic competitiveness, civil liberties, quality of life and human development. Each country has its own economic and social model, sometimes with large differences from its neighbors. Still, they share aspects of the Nordic model of economy and social structure to varying degrees. This includes a mixed market economy combined with strong labor unions and a universalist welfare sector financed by high taxes, enhancing individual autonomy and promoting social mobility. There is a high degree of income redistribution, commitment to private ownership and little social unrest.

“Nordic countries” include Norway, Sweden, Denmark (including the Faroe Islands), Finland, and Iceland. These five countries use the Nordic Council to work together on political and cultural activities. Denmark, Sweden, and Finland are also members of the European Union, but only Finland is part of the eurozone, meaning that it uses the Euro as its money. The other Nordic countries still use their own money, called krone or krona (from the word “crowns”). Norway and Iceland, which are not members of the EU, are members of NATO and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). Only Denmark, Sweden and Finland are members of both the EU and NATO.

The very low population density in much of Scandinavia, except Denmark, means that there is often more nature preserved in these countries, resulting in the beautiful forests, tundras, and fjords that you’ll find across the Nordics.

The Norwegian fjords are one of nature’s most spectacular creations. Their long, serpentine shores traverse picturesque landscapes, while their calm waters welcome travelers all year long.

The Geirangerfjord is among the most famous and most visited fjords in Norway, and not without reason. The area is on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its outstanding beauty.

Northern Norway is dark from afternoon until late morning, when the northern lights frequently soar across the sky. Our bold claim is that this part of Norway, with its multiple islands, deep fjords and steep mountains, is among the world’s most beautiful and interesting places in which to see the northern lights.

Nordic citizens experience a high sense of autonomy and freedom, as well as high levels of social trust towards each other, which play an important role in determining life satisfaction.

As the Norwegians say..Scandinavians do not live “in nature” but rather live “with nature”.
